Lancaster is the ancient county town of Lancashire. Relatively small but lively due to its high student population, it is a site of outstanding historical interest and natural beauty. The town boasts numerous historic buildings including a Norman castle, site of the infamous trials of the ‘Pendle witches’, ten of whom were hanged on Golgotha Hill in 1612. Surrounded on four sides by the Forest of Bowland, the Yorkshire Dales, the Lake District and Morecambe Bay, it presents easy access to some of the most beautiful countryside in Britain, including the literary landscapes of Coniston, Ullswater and Grasmere, made famous by their association with Ruskin and the Romantic poets. It is also within easy access of the major northern cities of Manchester and Liverpool, and is conveniently linked by rail to London, Glasgow and Edinburgh. The University is ranked among the top twenty higher education institutions in the country, and is based on a modern campus about 3.5 miles south of Lancaster. There are excellent transport links between the campus and the town.
